The fruit for Domaine Poulleau’s Bourgogne rouge comes exclusively from their holdings in Volnay, Meursault and Savigny-lès-Beaune which would otherwise make up those specific appellations’ bottlings. Commercially it is important to produce a Bourgogne rouge, however as it is often the most challenging wine to make, this provides an excellent insight into both the style of a producer and their mettle. This wine has immediate appeal and charm, with a lasting impression of freshness and bright red and dark berry fruits. A small percentage of the 2020 Bourgogne Côte d’Or Rouge was raised in used oak, as the overall yields were so small for the vintage that there was a surplus of barrels which would otherwise spoil and waste if not filled with wine. This does not mask the fruit or impart oak flavours, but simply adds a little more weight and an understated class and complexity to the delicious, fruit forward palate.
