Originally monikered ‘La Parde Haut Bailly’ and first produced in 1967, this is one of the originators of the ‘Second Wine’ and, true to form, stands as one of the finest produced. The 2019 Haut-Bailly II is elegant, nuanced and, while there are clear signs of a wine that will improve in bottle, it is already pretty enticing today. Svelte, silky tannins give way to bright red berry fruits, clove and woodsmoke, tobacco, cedar and mint. It is composed of 40% Cabernet Sauvignon and 60% Merlot, and is a gorgeous garnet-purple in the glass. The nose is already forward, generous and in wonderful harmony, with black cherry, blackberry preserves and wild blueberries, along with a touch of lavender. Medium to full-bodied, the palate has a solid foundation of chewy tannins balanced with a natural freshness, backing up the muscular, mouth-coating black and blue fruits and complex, undulating finish.
