‘Le Filigare’ is also the name of the hill on which this property stands. Here, the soils are mostly clay with a rich mineral structure, ideal drainage conditions, and set at an altitude of around 500 metres. This helps mitigate the effects of the sweltering summers and the blistering cold winters. Beneficial conditions such as these had a marked effect on the vintage, as 2021 presented two major problems: early Spring frosts and intense summer heat. However, both were sufficiently tempered by the high slopes and the slightly cooler temperatures this affords.
The wine is lithe with fine, ripe tannins and notes of redcurrant, sour cherry and dried fig leaves on the nose. It is, as it should be, majority Sangiovese with Canaiolo and Colorino in support, while 12 months in large old oak barrels knit those tannins together, giving a luscious, supple palate, where notes of tart red fruit and dried green herbs persist. There is also a subtle spice to the palate and the finish, which is long and wonderfully fresh thanks to those cooler conditions.
