Cinsault, has been regarded as the ugly duckling, unfavored as the Parent of Pinotage, but is becoming increasingly popular for boundary-pushing winemakers of South Africa’s winelands, appearing ever more varietally, rather than as an obscure blending partner of Shiraz or Grenache. This wine is made from 36 year old, dry farmed grapes grown in the south of the Swartland. It is characteristically light in colour and low in tannin; there is a soft elegance to this wine, but a crunchy character with dark cherries, raisins, strawberries, then earthy undertones, fresh black pepper, and an appealing mintiness.
