What stands out, with all the Gavignet wines is just how approachable they are. A young, powerful Pommard, for example, may seem a little standoffish, but so well judged are the tannins, the careful extraction and the judicious use of high quality oak (around 20% new, the rest between one and five year’s old) that this is simply sensational already. The fruit comes from 70+ year old vines, so the palate is concentrated, awash with sweet red cherry, cranberry, blackcurrant leaf and cassis, violet and a hint of sichuan pepper. Already, earthy undertones are developing on the mid-palate, but the finish at this stage is pretty, ripe and fresh and the feel of the mouth coating, angular tannins persists.
