The 2022 is a beautiful iteration of Poulleau’s Côte d’Or Bourgogne Rouge, drawing on the qualities of the vintage and the characteristics of each site that makes up this very fine Pinot Noir. What marks the year is a wonderful freshness to the reds, with soft but persistent acidity, and concentrated, ripe sweet fruit. The wine has a fragrant bouquet, with fresh strawberry, a hint of plum but also tart redcurrant. On the palate, the tannins are lithe but more prevalent than the previous vintage, due to slightly thicker skinned berries. This adds welcome depth and structure to the svelte palate which is alive with more crushed red berry fruits, cherry and the characteristic kernel notes of Poulleau’s reds. Careful oak treatment (all second and third-fill barrels only) adds breadth, while the finish hints at the savoury appeal to come with age. Fortunately, it is utterly delicious now, too!
