To this day, the Wehlener Sonnenuhr is regarded as one of the most important sites in German viticulture and one of great renown – the world-famous sundial in the Lammerterley vineyard was built here in 1842. The vineyards sit on stony Devonian slate-weathered soil, which gives the wines a unique balance of bright, shimmering fruit and delicate finesse. This one has a beautiful nose of blossom and white flowers, with a light touch of ripe stone fruit. This is matched by the palate, which is rich and intense, with juicy apricot, pineapple, white peach and citrus fruits, and a delicate cracked white pepper warmth. It is richly mouth-coating, but with a superbly balanced streak of acidity, and a firm, tense, steely backbone that keeps the wine fresh throughout – entirely mouthwatering, with impressive length to the finish.
